Self Possessed's First Book Full of Champions
Many of the breed’s top trotting matrons are booked to Self Possessed, the fastest racing trotter of all time, for the 2000 breeding season. The list includes more than 180 mares, as the 4-year-old son of Victory Dream is scheduled to handle a full book in his first season at Kentuckiana Farms’ New Jersey stallion station. By any yardstick, this is a very impressive group.
Self Possessed’s excellent fertility test, first reported here, has opened his first book to a stellar collection of trotting females, among them several mares who are either world champions, or are the dams of champions. Many are Merrie Annabelle and/or Breeders Crown or Hambletonian Oaks winners. In no particular order, here are some highlighted mares from the first book to be bred this spring.
Armstrong Brothers has committed both Armbro Keepsake and her dam, Armbro Fern. Steve Katz of Walnut Hall, Ltd. has booked Astoria Lobell, dam of 1999 two year old champion, Dream Of Joy. Hanover Shoe Farms has booked Beat The Wheel, a mating that will match the fastest male and female trotters in history. Hanover Shoe Farms will also breed Divine Victory, a daughter of Valley Victory, and Monet Blue Chip, whose 1999 yearling filly by Valley Victory sold for $300,000. Futurity Hill Farm has booked Bedell, the dam of Donerail and Gramola. Perretti Farms will breed Bit O Candy, 1999’s fastest racing 3-year-old filly as well as Vernon Blue Chip. Walnut Hall Stock Farm will send their millionaire mare, Britelite Lobell. Jeffrey Gural will send Chili Bowl (dam of Giant Chill) and Hildy Hanover (dam of Fern)
The Italian owners of CR Kay Suzie have also committed to Self Possessed. Doug Millard and Jerry Van Boekle have also booked Elegantimage, the leading money-winning daughter of Balanced Image. Emilie Cas El, a sister to Angus Hall and Conway Hall, is also committed by the partnership of Steve Stewart/Joe Taylor and Kempi Stable. Brittany Farms will breed Higher Love, the dam of Lookout Victory, Miss Flirt (dam of Dancer’s Victory) and Intercontinental, dam of Continentalvictory. Kentuckiana Farms will breed, among others, Lifelong Victory, Miss Photogenic (dam of Lovelytobehold) and Winky’s Goal, the Armbro Goal sister to Supergill.
Cane Run Farm will breed Nan’s Catch, the dam of Moni Maker. Hans Enggren has booked Peace Corps. Jorgen Jahre, Jr. and Ed Rudner have a booking for Rae, the Speedy Crown filly who won the 1998 Merrie Annabelle. Al Libfeld will breed Victorious Tail (dam of Kick Tail, Comet’s Tail and Day For Night.) Southwind Farms will breed the top race filly, Cruise Team to Self Possessed, and Shaun Eisenhauer, attorney for Hanover Shoe Farms, has booked his Prakas mare, Expressway Hanover, a Breeders Crown winner.
Self Possessed stands for a fee of $15,000 at Kentuckiana Farms, New Jersey. Syndicate manager Art Zubrod reports that more than 400 requests for breeding contracts had been received. The North American breeding season will open in about two weeks.
