Moni Maker Is All The Way Back in Trotting Classic Leg

Moni Maker clearly demonstrated again that she is indeed all the way back from the physical problems which derailed her season earlier in the year, as she dominated the field to win the $72,500 third leg of the Trotting Classic series Saturday night at Mohawk Raceway in Canada.

Driven by Johnny Takter for his brother, trainer Jimmy Takter, Moni Maker took over before the half-mile pole and set all the fractions in the 1 3/8-mile feature, winning by more than two lengths in a display of trotting power. Takter and Moni Maker sailed past the half in a quick :58 2-5, with the three-quarters reached in 1:30. The spectacular mare then rolled off the fourth quarter in :28 3-5, reaching the mile post in 1:58 3-5. With three-eighths to go, the mare was challenged by a first over bid from Glory’s Comet and John Campbell. Goodtimes had led the field to the quarter and sat on Moni Maker’s back throughout. In the long Mohawk stretch, Moni Maker did not falter, scoring in 2:41 4-5 for the 1 3/8-mile. Goodtimes was unable to gain on the famous mare in the stretch, but did wind up second for Dave Wall, with B Cor Pete third.

Glory's Comet wound up fourth after his overland bid and Turnpike Token completed the purse distribution. Rounding out the talented field were Kick Tail, sixth, with T Cody seventh. Serious Hanover made a break entering the last turn and was eighth.

Moni Maker now takes her pursuit of Peace Corps’ money record to Chicago’s Balmoral Park, where she is expected to compete in the $170,000 American-National at Balmoral Park on October 9. Tonight’s win was the eighth of the year for Moni Maker in 14 starts, and her fourth win in her last five appearances. She has clearly regained the spectacular form that saw her trot to international prominence in the past two seasons.
