Moni Maker Could Still Reach Peace Corps' Earnings Mark This Fall
Moni Maker, who trails Peace Corps by less than $300,000 on the all-time money earning list, continues her relentless march toward the earnings title this Saturday as she meets eight other rivals in the $72,500 third leg of the Trotting Classic series at Mohawk Raceway.
Moni Maker has earned $3,848,028 and could pass Peace Corps with victories in this leg of the Trotting Classic, the $170,000 est. American-National final October 9 at Balmoral and the Trotting Classic series final, worth $400,000 est. on October 23, back at Mohawk. The 6-year-old Speedy Crown mare has rebounded from the physical problems that stopped her march toward the money title earlier this season. In two of her last three appearances, she has won at 1¼-mile at Ladbroke at the Meadows, and at 1 1/16-mile at Freehold, both in Classic Series competition. Her victory at The Meadows was in the Classic Oaks series, and at Freehold, she defeated males in the second leg of the Trotting Classic. This series leg at Mohawk is at the demanding distance of 1 3/8-mile.
Trainer Jimmy Takter is named to drive the mare in her Mohawk appearance Saturday from the rail against seven other rivals, and victory is far from a foregone conclusion. The field includes the rugged Balanced Image veterans Goodtimes, B Cor Pete and Glory’s Comet. Each has performed admirably in the past in Classic Series competition. Goodtimes won two legs of the 1998 Trotting Classic series and Glory’s Comet won the Trotting Classic final last fall at Mohawk. B Cor Pete won the very first Classic Series event at the Meadowlands in 1997.
Goodtimes owns the North American mark, as well as the stakes record for this distance, of 2:40.2s, set last year at Woodbine in Classic Series competition. Moni Maker last appeared in Canada finishing second in the inaugural Trot Mondial to Supergrit, who is not eligible to the Trotting Classic series. Her last appearance at Mohawk was when she won the inaugural Classic Oaks final in 1997. The complete field for this final leg of the Trotting Classic series includes:
Moni Maker (PP1--Jimmy Takter)
Serious Hanover (PP2-Mike Lachance)
B Cor Pete (PP3—Doug Brown)
T Cody (PP4—Trevor Ritchie)
Turnpike Token (PP 5—Randy Waples)
Goodtimes (PP 6—Dave Wall)
Glory’s Comet (PP 7—John Campbell)
Kick Tail (PP 8—Berndt Lindstedt)
