Supergrit Upsets Moni Maker in Trot Mondial
Breeders Crown winner Supergrit (Supergill-Gutsy Lobell) upset the post time favorite Moni Maker to win the inaugural $500,000 Trot Mondial at Hippodrome De Montreal on Saturday afternoon. With Chris Christoforou in the bike for trainer Jeff Charles and owner Dennis Doyle of Novi, Michigan, Supergrit stalked Moni Maker through the latter half of the race then wore her down in the lane, winning by 2 lengths. Fractions for the race were :27, :57.3, 1:27.1, 1:56.3 and 2:40.4.
Moni Maker, making just her second start back since an irregular heartbeat in the June 18th Titan Cup elimination at the Meadowlands put her out of action for six weeks, was used twice to gain and hold the lead in the 1 3/8 mile race. Moni Maker held for second with Kick Tail closing from post position 11 to finish third.
Supergrit is a six-year-old gelding who now has four wins, one second and two thirds on the season with career earnings now in excess of $1.5 million.
“I had to position myself as close as possible to Moni Maker in the final straight, and I couldn’t ask for more," said Christoforou. "My horse finishes races strongly and, with the advantageous position I was in, my horse’s task
was easier,” he added. “The new track in Montreal is marvelous and the site setup is superb.”
