Fool's Goal Hits The Jackpot In Cutler Elim
The field for the Arthur Cutler Memorial, reduced by two with the scratches of Super High Test and Stormont Bronze, saw Jim Doherty and Fool’s Goal (Armbro Goal-Contestique) rocket to a career-best 1:52.3 win.
With all of the entrants advancing to the final, Fool’s Goal and Georgia Limited (Mike Lachance) battled to the quarter in :27.2, with Magician (George Brennan) poised to take over past the half in :54.3. On top by the three-quarters in 1:23.4 and opening up two lengths down the stretch, Magician and Brennan could not withstand the closing brush of Jim Doherty and Fool’s Goal, who went on to win by half-a-length.
Trained by Dorothy Morone and owned by Bruce McElven, Fool’s Goal was winning for the first time in six starts this season. The 15-1 long shot returned $30.20 for the win.
“I left a little with him from the gate,” said Doherty. “I ended up sitting in the four-hole with him all the way. At the top of the stretch, I got behind Magician which helped a little. He was strong to the finish.”
Magician was second with Glorys Comet third and Supertoy fourth. Fool’s Goal drew the rail in the $160,000 final. The rest of the field from the rail out is Alanjopa, Magician, Party Party, Kick Tail, Glorys Comet, Armbro Rusher, Supertoy and Georgia Limited.
